Image AIs such as Midjourney or Stable Diffusion are suitable for getting inspiration for maker projects such as furniture construction or particularly unusual Raspi housings. However, the artificial brains only generate two-dimensional illustrations, not 3D models or blueprints. Make editor Johannes Börnsen shows in the video how to take measurements from a bedside table draft generated by Midjourney with the free drawing program Sketchup Make.
The image must be generated in such a way that you look at a corner of the imaginary object and lines are visible in the image that run to the vanishing point.
If you want to follow the tutorial using the image shown in the video, you can download the image of the bedside table here. If you prefer to download the finished bedside table model in Sketchup Make 2017 format instead, you can find the relevant file here.
Sketchup Make 2017 is no longer being developed, but still works on Windows and Mac OS (also with Apple Silicon). It is no longer possible to download it from the manufacturer’s website, but it can be downloaded from heise download.
