Fire TV Omni: Amazon’s televisions are coming to Germany

Amazon presented a range of new, self-developed smart TVs in London today, Wednesday – including the top model, the “Omni-QLED series”. As the name suggests, the TVs in this series offer a 4K quantum dot display (including HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ Adaptive and integrated ambient light sensor).

The real special feature is, on the one hand, that Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa, including far-field microphones, is integrated into the models, and on the other hand that the televisions are transformed into a “personal display”.

The latter feature, which goes by the term “Ambient TV”, includes widgets that can display different information – some calendar entries or mini control panels for smart home devices. This has been known since the Echo Show 15, although the Fire TV Omni does not offer face recognition – which means that there is no automatic switching between several profiles. However, this can still be done manually. There are also widgets specially adapted to TV operation, which give an insight into what is currently available as a stream or via DVB.

Outside of TV operation, the televisions can also be used to display works of art, animated backgrounds and your own photos. Customers can start with a collection of over 1,700 photos and curated artworks in a wide range of styles for free. The Ambient TV collection also includes works from local institutions such as the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Galerie Neue Meister, the Berlinische Galerie and the Nationalgalerie.

Amazon already offers a dynamic image on the Fire TV Omni, developed with artist Sam Stubblefield, that changes over time depending on parameters such as the current weather where the TV is located and the time of day. For example, two users who start with the same work of art see different images after a while because the temperatures or wind speeds are different at their locations.

However, Amazon has already presented in London how Alexa will generate AI images on demand in the future. According to current plans, this function should be available by the end of the year. Initially, it will probably not be possible to use your own images as templates.

Alexa works practically like an echo in the Fire TV Omni, which means that the device listens for commands in the room even when the TV is on standby. However, the far-field microphones can be switched off electronically at the push of a button. In addition, customers can adapt functions to their preferences, such as deactivating the integrated motion detection or setting quiet hours during which no information is to be displayed on the screen.

The QLED series Fire TV Omni is available in sizes 43, 50, 55 and 65 inches from 600 euros. The 65-inch model will be available from April 12th at the introductory price of 800 euros (it will later cost 1000 euros), all other Omni-QLED sizes will follow on June 1st.
